Category: Process

ars-imago, based out of Italy, works to make the at-home film developing process as simple and accessible as possible. Their flagship LAB-BOX Daylight Developing tank allows users to develop their own 35mm or 120 film in full daylight, without the need for a darkroom or changing bag, and is therefore the perfect introduction to home processing.

Film Modules

The LAB-BOX tank features a multi-format reel that can accomodate both 135 and 120 film for ultimate flexibility. Only a single roll of film can be processed at a time with the tank. A separate, interchangeable film module attaches to the main tank body during assembly and prior to loading the tank.

Agitation Options

Both intermittent and continuous agitation are possible with the LAB-BOX, depending on how much solution is poured into the tank, allowing for both experimentation and fine-tuning of your process to best suit your needs. The internal reel is turned by the included agitation knob, but an accessary Crank is available for those who see themselves using constant agitation often.

Design

The LAB-BOX was designed by VIVO Design Studio in Rome, Italy. Following a careful test-and-review process, ars-imago has been able to optimize the final size of the tank and simplify its construction, in order to deliver a tool that is both sturdy and easy to use. The specialized team created detailed technical drawings, transforming them into 3D models and making use of all the latest digital manufacturing technologies.

The daylight loading feature is a game-changer for me—no more wrestling with changing bags in a cramped closet. The tank feels solid and the reels loaded smoothly on my first try, which honestly surprised me. I ran two rolls back-to-back and the whole process took maybe twenty minutes total.

I was dreading the dark bag shuffle with film spools, but this tank just clicks together in open daylight and you're done. The loading mechanism is forgiving for a beginner like me, and it takes up barely any space on my kitchen counter.

The daylight-loading feature is a game-changer for me—I can finally spool film without sacrificing my bathroom to darkness. It feels sturdy in hand and the spiral ratchets are smooth, so even my shaky fingers didn’t foul a roll. Took a few tries to get the hang of it, but now it’s my favorite part o
